Why Forex

What is Foreign Exchange?
Foreign Exchange is relatively new to the Majority as, until recently it was the sole preserve of financial institutions. However, individuals and institutions have been able to participate in FOREX since the Reserve Banks relaxed restrictions. The Internet has been instrumental in spreading the popularity of this tool.

What is the FOREX Market?
The foreign exchange market is the buying and selling of various currencies, and is the largest financial market in the world. Within this arena, there are four major players: Banks (the market makers, who earn significant profits buying and selling currencies between each other), commercial dealers, private investors and central banks. Central banks play a pivotal role in the currency trading. By acting on behalf of their governments from time to time, they are able to influence the value of their currencies. These interventions create even bigger opportunities for profits. Speculators are able to gain from the rise in a currency's value by going long (buying in expectation of a price rise) or by going short (selling in anticipation of a decrease in price).

How the Market Works?
The Foreign Exchange (FOREX or FX) market, as we know it today was evolved by 1973 when exchange rates were allowed to freely float. With a daily turnover of about US$ 2 trillion, the FOREX market is the largest financial market in the world. FOREX, unlike most other markets, is not conducted in a centralised location, but rather takes place in hundreds of different locations around the world. Trading occurs over the Internet, via telephone, and other communication networks between dealers, banks and traders. The market operates on a 24 hour time period (except on weekends and public holidays).

Foreign currency prices fluctuate on a daily basis, and their prices may vary for many different economic reasons. As a Financial Analyst, it is the economic reasons and these price fluctuations that we wish to monitor, and essentially profit from.

Currency is generally quoted in pairs. That is, it is referenced to another currency (often the US dollar). We need to compare how our currency compares to the US dollar or how the British pound compares to the US dollar etc.
